Your gear ratio determines how many times the driveshaft turns for each turn of the wheels. A numerically higher ratio (say 4.88 instead of 3.90) means more torque multiplication — stronger acceleration and pulling power, at the cost of higher cruising revs. A numerically lower ratio does the opposite.

Do diff upgrades need certification in New Zealand?

This is a common and sensible question. Under the LVVTA (Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association) certification threshold schedule, changing your differential ratio does not require LVVTA certification provided only the diff centre or gear-set is changed and the original equipment axle housing is retained. In plain terms, swapping ratios or internals inside your factory housing generally sits below the certification threshold.
