This Land Cruiser ring and pinion is a genuine Terrain Tamer crownwheel and pinion set in 4.10 ratio. It suits the Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series 9.5″ rear differential. Terrain Tamer builds it to Toyota’s original specification, so it takes hard off-road work, heavy towing and daily driving in its stride.
Terrain Tamer heat treats every set, then precision cuts the teeth so they run quietly. Because it is made to OEM standards, it fits and drives like the factory gears it replaces. You also pay well under genuine Toyota money for it.
Big tyres raise your effective gearing. The truck then feels sluggish off the mark, and the auto hunts between gears. A numerically higher ratio brings it back. As a rough guide, 33s usually need one step and 35s need two.
The 80 Series drives all four wheels all the time. Both diffs must therefore run the same ratio, because a mismatched pair will chew out the transfer case. If you are not sure what you have now, check the tag on the diff housing. Otherwise give us a call and we will confirm it before you order.
A ratio change means stripping the diff and setting it up again. While it is apart, it pays to do the wear items. You will need a bearing kit, and we suggest a solid pinion spacer instead of the collapsible crush sleeve. Fresh gear oil goes in on assembly.
Want to go lower than Terrain Tamer offers? We also stock Revolution Gear sets for the 80 Series rear in 5.29. If you are regearing the front to match, we have 4.88 and 5.29 sets for the 8″ front as well.
We build and set up Land Cruiser diffs in our Christchurch workshop every week. Setting up a crownwheel and pinion takes practice and the right gauges. So if you would rather not tackle it, look at our 80 Series front and rear differentials instead. We build them as a matched pair, ready to bolt straight in.
