Redline Friction Modifier and Break-In Additive is a limited-slip differential additive. It reduces friction to eliminate clutch chatter, and it lowers break-in temperatures for new gears by as much as 50°F. High break-in temperatures can destroy the surface hardening on new gear teeth. As a result, softened gears wear out faster than they should.
Limited-slip and posi-traction differentials use plates or clutches to lock up under load. Too little slipperiness causes chatter, but too much reduces traction and increases wheel spin. This additive lets you dial in that balance to suit your differential.
Add this additive 1oz at a time to clutch-type limited-slip or posi-traction differentials to eliminate chatter. For chatter prevention in an already broken-in unit, use it at 4% of your total gear oil volume. That typically works out to one 4oz bottle. For breaking in a new differential, increase that to 4 to 8%. It’s compatible with both petroleum and synthetic gear oils. In practice, we often recommend adding the full 4oz bottle at once to eliminate chatter quickly.
Most Redline gear oils already contain this friction modifier, except the NS range. For the best control over chatter, pair Redline 75W90NS with this additive, and add it gradually until the chatter disappears. In racing differentials and quick-change units running Redline ShockProof gear oils, an additional 3 to 6% is recommended. This additive is also available in a 5-Gallon size directly from Redline dealers for shops that go through it often.
This additive satisfies the performance requirements of GM 1052358, Ford M2C118-A and 19B546-MA, and Chrysler 4318060. It also covers most import specifications.
