Redline 75W85 Gear Oil is a fully synthetic gear oil built from polyol ester base stocks, carrying a GL-5 service rating. It’s popular in many late-model BMW, Dodge, Ford, GM, Jeep, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Ram, and Toyota vehicles. Owners use it in differentials, final drives, and transfer cases. It contains friction modifiers for compatibility with clutch-type limited-slip differentials, though most LSDs don’t need extra friction modifier. Ester base stocks also give it a strong affinity for hot metal surfaces. That helps maintain a protective film under load.
This oil satisfies the viscosity requirements of SAE 75W80, 75W, 80W, and 85W gear oils. It also meets the requirements of SAE 30 and 10W30 motor oil. A high viscosity index of 171 keeps film thickness relatively constant as temperatures change. It also offers superior shear stability and reduced oxidation compared with conventional gear oils. It exceeds API GL-5 specifications for extra protection under load. Its light viscosity also helps free up power that heavier conventional gear oils tend to absorb.
Formula racing teams also use this oil in transaxles such as the Hewland LD-200 and FTR sequential gearbox. However, it’s not designed for most manual transmissions or transaxles with synchronizers, since its extreme slipperiness can cause shifting problems. Red Line previously sold this same product as LightWeight Gear Oil. The two names refer to identical chemistry, just under different labelling.
